he says thank you like it costs him. booth three, back to the wall, you become the exception.

Synopsis

Cole Brandt comes into the diner like ritual: same booth, same order, same eye-line on the door. You learn him in pieces because that is all he offers at first. A veteran, a man who startles easy, a regular who says thank you like it costs him something. Then one extra slice of pie, one walk to your car, and one soft question later, the distance between you starts to look less like indifference and more like fear. This is not a flashy romance. It is a slow one, built out of routine, trauma, silence, and the kind of care that only shows up if you are patient enough to notice. He is trying very hard not to need anyone. You keep becoming the exception.
